Cowboys Conclude Play In Louisiana
September 24, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg dropped a hard-fought match in the semifinals of the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on Saturday, bringing the Cowboys' weekend of competition to an end.
Finzelberg, looking to continue his great run at the Cajun Classic, put up a valiant effort against the tournament's top seed and No. 15-ranked player in the country, William Bushamuka of Kentucky, but ultimately fell short in the contest. The German international was one of OSU's bright spots throughout the weekend as he won his first three matches in straight sets to secure his spot in the semifinals.
Finzelberg's deep run at the tournament marked the third consecutive season that an OSU player advanced to at least the quarterfinals and was the second time in the past three years that a Cowboy qualified for the semifinals at the tournament.
Along with Finzelberg's outstanding performances, the Cowboys were able to produce some other highlights over their three days competing at this year's Cajun Classic.
Finzelberg, Tristan Meraut and three-time All-American Arjun Kadhe all won their opening-round matchups in the singles main draw on Thursday. For Meraut, his victory over LSU's Rafael Wagner was his first of the season after he struggled to find his footing at the Silverado Invitational two weekends ago. The Paris, France native is looking to build on last season's success when he compiled a career-best 19 victories in singles action.
Next up for the Cowboys is their first in-state competition of the young season as they take a short road trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the ITA All-American Championships, which begins September 30.
Oklahoma State Results (Day Three)
Singles Semifinals:
No. 15 William Bushamuka (UK) def. Lukas Finzelberg (OSU), 6-1, 7-5
