Finzelberg Secures Semifinal Berth at Cajun Classic
September 23, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg continued his run in the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic on Friday as he knocked off his first ranked opponent of the season to secure a spot in the semifinals of the event.
Finzelberg was the standout from yesterday's field, knocking off both of his opponents in straight-sets to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw. On Friday, Finzelberg's run continued as he knocked off Southern California's Thibault Forget in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals. Forget entered the event as the No. 6 seed and is ranked No. 85 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The German international's success marks the second time in three seasons that a Cowboy has qualified for the semifinals at this event after Arjun Kadhe was a finalist two years ago. In order for Finzelberg to match his teammate, he will have to go head-to-head with one of the nation's top-ranked players tomorrow as he faces No. 15 William Bushamuka of Kentucky. The semifinal match between the two is slated to begin at noon on Saturday.
Finzelberg's busy day on the court would continue in the afternoon session as he and doubles partner Tristan Meraut returned to the court for their first match as a tandem since the Cowboys' appearance in the Round of 16 against top-ranked Virginia at the NCAA Tournament last season. The pair would struggle in their return to action together, dropping their opening match in the Round of 16 to Louisiana-Lafayette's Eric Perez and Coleman Wahlborg, 7-5, 6-3, as they looked to shake off an offseason's worth of rust.
Day three of play at the Cajun Classic is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with singles back draw action before both the singles and doubles main draw semifinals take place in the afternoon.
Oklahoma State Results (Day Two)

Doubles Round of 16:
