LAFAYETTE, La. – Oklahoma State's Lukas Finzelberg won both of his matches in straight sets on Thursday to secure his spot in the quarterfinals of the John Breaux Cajun Tennis Classic.
In his first competitive matches of the fall season, Finzelberg defeated Kentucky's Nils Ellefsen, 6-4, 6-3, and then knocked off Big 12-rival Leo Telles of Texas, 6-3, 6-2, to lock up a spot in the quarterfinals. The German international's performance on the first day of competition marks the third straight year that a Cowboy has advanced to the quarterfinals of the event, with his teammate Arjun Kadhe achieving the mark in each of the past two seasons.
"The conditions here are really hard with the humidity and the bad weather so I was glad that I didn't have to play too long," Finzelberg said. "I played pretty smart and didn't miss too many easy balls. I'm very glad to make it through to the quarterfinals."
As the No. 7 seed at the event this year, Kadhe was looking to make another deep run after placing second two years ago and making a quarterfinal run last season.
Kadhe got on a roll in his opening contest as he advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Kentucky's Jake Stefanik in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Pune, India native looked to continue to build on his early momentum, but dropped a back-and-forth contest with Texas' Colin Markes, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.
Tristan Meraut, the third Cowboy competing at this weekend's event, picked up his first win of the season by defeating LSU's Rafael Wagner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, in the opening round. The Frenchman put up a valiant effort in his Round of 16 matchup, but couldn't overcome the nation's 15th-ranked player William Bushamuka, dropping the match, 6-1, 6-4. Meraut is the only OSU player in this week's field to have competed in the Silverado Invitational two weekends ago.
Day two of the Cajun Classic is slated to begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the next round of the singles back draw, followed by the singles main draw at 10:30 a.m. Meraut and Finzelberg will continue the partnership they formed at the end of last season as doubles action gets underway on Friday as well.
The Cowboy duo will square off against UL's Eric Perez and Coleman Wahlborg in their first matchup, which is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
