STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State Cowboy cross country team went one-two-three en route to a opening-day sweep at the Cowboy Duals, and the Cowgirls finished third with Savannah Camacho leading the way, taking fourth overall.
Josh Thompson, Christian Liddell and Luis Martinez crossed the line first through third, with Liddell and Martinez finishing just a tenth of-a-second behind Thompson.
"It's nice to run the home course again," Thompson said. "Our race plan was to kind of stay together as a team and make a controlled effort to make sure everyone stayed in it."
The 11th-ranked Cowboys swept the dual-meet, defeating Arkansas, OU, Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Wichita State handily thanks to a seventh-place finish from Anthoney Armstrong and 21st place finish from Sukhi Khosla in his Cowboy debut.
"This meet is growing year-by-year," coach Dave Smith said. "It started with just local teams, but now we're kind of expanding out and I'd imagine it might get a little bigger too. It's a great course to run on, it's low-key logistically, and a nice opportunity to get some work in."
Arkansas' Carina Viljoen won the women's 3K, and led Arkansas to the 5-0 performance. Camacho took fourth and was OSU's highest finisher in front of a posse of Cowgirls including Natalie Baker in 11th.
"We wanted to stay together as a team the first 2K," Camacho said. "The goal was 3:50 but we came in at 3:45, so we kind of rolled with it and kept going and the last kid to go just pick off people - it was fun."
Anna Boyert and Jennifer Celis took 13th and 14th, respectively, and Kaytlyn Larson took 20th to wrap up the OSU top-five and give the Cowgirls a 3-2 dual record on the day. Kaylee Dodd and Cowgirl sprinter Danielle Coleman crossed the line in 32nd and 36th.
"We went in to this with the idea that it was kind of a rust-buster and let some of the new kids get a chance to run in uniform and become a part of the cross country family," Smith said.
Freshmen Bailey Sutherlin, Kami Hankins, Kaylee Oyler and Carly Flinn made their OSU debuts, and Jillian Hagen joined them in the top-45.
With the opening race out of the way, the Pokes rest up and turn their attention to their final home race of the year in the Cowboy Jamboree Sept. 24.
