Cross Country Announces 2016 Schedule
August 01, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State cross country program released its schedule for the upcoming 2016 season that includes two home events, the team announced Monday.
OSU opens the season the same way it did a year ago with the Cowboy Duals on September 1. The Pokes will welcome the same group of teams from last year's inaugural Cowboy Preview with Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Oral Roberts coming to town.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls take a few weeks off before hosting their second and final home meet of the season in the 80th running of the Cowboy Jamboree scheduled for September 24.
The Cowboys will run for their 22nd Jamboree team win, while the Cowgirls are aiming for their 12th win. Both teams have the chance to make it seven-straight team titles under coach Dave Smith, which would add to the Cowgirls' record for longest streak in Jamboree history, and move the Cowboys to within one of Arkansas for the men's consecutive wins record.
Smith's squads will close out the regular season with a trip to State College, Pennsylvania, to run in the Penn State Invitational, then gear up for the Big 12 Championships two weeks later in Lubbock, Texas.
Last year's conference champion Vegard Oelstad and the Cowgirls' highest finisher Ingeborg Loevnes graduated in the offseason, but both squads return all-conference and All-American runners for the 2016 season.
NCAA mile champion Kaela Edwards and NCAA 5,000-meter runner-up Aurora Dybedokken will lead a young Cowgirl roster this fall, while Big 12 Outdoor Freshman of the Year Cerake Geberkidane and USTFCCCA Indoor Male Athlete of the Year Josh Thompson look to keep Cowboys on top of the Big 12.
The Cowboys can make it nine consecutive conference titles, while the Cowgirls, who picked up their first Big 12 title a season ago, could give OSU its first back-to-back sweep of the Big 12 cross country titles, and the first consecutive team sweep in the conference since Colorado did it from 1999-2007.
Iowa hosts the Midwest Regional, where again the Cowboys have dominated. A Cowboy team has won the Midwest Regional for 11-straight seasons, and 15 times since 1997. On the women's side, OSU took the regional crown last year for the first time since 2005.
Terre Haute, Indiana, is set to host the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the third time in four years after Louisville, Kentucky, broke the streaks in 2012 and 2015. At last year's championships, the Cowgirls finished seventh, their second highest finish in school history, and the Cowboys took 18th.
