OKLAHOMA CITY – A nine-run eighth inning by TCU doomed Oklahoma State Thursday night at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as the Cowboys dropped a 13-5 contest at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The loss snapped OSU's four-game winning streak as the second-seeded Cowboys fell to 36-19 on the season. The Pokes will now face Texas in an elimination game Friday at 7 p.m.
OSU jumped on the Horned Frogs in its first at bat, batting around and plating four runs on four hits.
J.R. Davis got things started with an infield single and after Corey Hassel reached on an error and Donnie Walton walked, the bases were full of Cowboys. Davis would come home to score the game's first run on a passed ball before Conor Costello made it 3-0 with a two-RBI single up the middle. Two batters later, Ryan Sluder kept the rally going as he drove home another run with a single to give OSU a four-run advantage.
That lead held until the fourth when TCU mounted a two-out rally against Thomas Hatch. After the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year struck out the first two Frogs in the inning, he surrendered five-straight hits that tied the score at 4-4 before finally getting out of the inning with another strikeout.
Hatch, who tossed a shutout against TCU on April 22, worked 6 2/3 innings this time around and racked up nine strikeouts while also allowing nine hits and no walks.
The score remained tied until the seventh when the Cowboys went back on top. After Walton reached on a fielder's choice, Garrett Benge stepped to the plate with two outs and lifted an RBI double into the right field corner to put OSU up 5-4.
But the lead did not last long. In the top of the eighth, TCU put a runner on first with one out, and the Cowboys called on closer Tyler Buffett to take the mound.
Things would quickly unravel for the right-hander, however, as the first two batters Buffett faced collected singles to load the bases. Up next, a wild pitch plated the tying run before a hit batter put the Frogs up 6-5.
TCU (40-14) wasn't done as an RBI single by Austen Wade was followed by a two-RBI double down the right field line from Mason Hesse to extend the lead to 9-5 and end Buffett's stint on the hill.
Things went from bad to worse for the Cowboys as Alex Hackerott surrendered consecutive homers to Evan Skoug and Luken Baker to push the TCU lead to 13-5. The inning finally came to an end with the Frogs scoring nine times on seven hits.
Hassel, Benge and Sluder led the Cowboys offensively with two hits apiece as OSU was outhit in the contest by a 17-9 margin.
