OKLAHOMA CITY – For the second-straight night at the Big 12 Championship, a big eighth inning doomed Oklahoma State as the Cowboys suffered a 12-8 loss to Texas Friday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Â
A day after TCU scored nine runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Cowboys, Texas (24-31) did the same to knock OSU out of the tourney as the Pokes fell to 36-20 on the season. OSU, which advanced to the tournament title game each of the last two years, will find out its NCAA Tournament fate Monday when the field of 64 is announced at 11 a.m. (CST).
Â
The fateful eighth inning saw Texas collect five hits, and five of its nine runs were of the unearned variety as the Cowboys used three different pitchers.
Â
Michael Mertz took the loss as he walked two and hit a batter and allowed three runs to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Â
OSU won its first four meetings with Texas this season and was poised to go 5-0 after a sixth-inning rally that saw the Cowboys erase a two-run deficit by plating seven runs.
Â
The Cowboys trailed 3-1 entering the sixth but sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and piled up seven runs on seven hits.
Â
Donnie Walton led off the frame with the first of four consecutive singles for the Pokes, with Conor Costello picking up an RBI to make it 3-2 before Dustin Williams brought home the tying run.
Â
With two outs, the Cowboys took the lead after executing a double steal as Costello avoided the tag of UT catcher Tres Barrera following a rundown and scored the go-ahead run.
Â
OSU added to the lead on back-to-back RBI doubles down the left field line by Collin Theroux and J.R. Davis before Corey Hassel singled up the middle to put the Cowboys up, 7-3. Hassel would later score on the Cowboys' second double steal of the inning when he swiped third and Barrera threw the ball into left field to push the lead to five.
Â
The Cowboys held the 8-3 advantage until the eighth. Tyler Buffett came out of the bullpen to open the inning and was greeted by a double from Travis Jones. After a walk, an error at second base loaded the bases with no outs, and Texas took advantage, getting RBIs from Jake McKenzie Zane Gurwitz, Tyler Rand and Patrick Mathis to cut its deficit to one.
Â
Clinging to the 8-7 lead, OSU called on Mertz with a runner on first and two outs. But the right-hander promptly walked the first two batters he faced, then hit Travis Jones with a pitch to bring home the tying run.
Â
Up next, Joe Lienhard took the mound, but he surrendered a two-RBI single to Bret Boswell as UT regained the lead before a two-RBI triple by Kody Clemens extended that advantage to 12-8.
Â
Texas took the game's initial lead on an RBI single Bret Boswell in the second inning, but the Cowboys quickly tied the score in their next at bat. After Colin Simpson and Theroux walked to open the third, Davis brought home a run with a single through the left side to make it 1-1.
Â
The game remained tied until the fifth when the Longhorns knocked OSU starter Jensen Elliott from the game with a pair of runs. McKenzie led off the inning with a double and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, he scored the go-ahead run on a groundout.
Â
Following back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with one out, Texas took a 3-1 advantage on a sacrifice fly by Kacy Clemens before Remey Reed came out of the OSU bullpen and got out of the inning with a groundout to keep the deficit at two.
Â
OSU had three players – Davis, Walton and Costello – each finish with two hits in the contest as the Cowboys recorded 11 in the game.
