Cash/Kadhe Grind Out Win, Advance To Round Of 16
May 26, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State's Julian Cash & Arjun Kadhe secured a spot in the round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championship with a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) opening round win over Florida State's Benjamin Lock & Marco Nunez at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
With the victory, OSU has now had a doubles team reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championship in three consecutive seasons as Kadhe and his former doubles partner Jakob Sude made an appearance in the quarterfinals last year and the semifinals in 2014.
"When you say something like that it sounds pretty good, but we want to go further and we have a tough second round upcoming," Kadhe said.
Cash/Kadhe came out strong early as the two Cowboys took a quick 3-0 lead over the Florida State duo and went on to take the set in dominant fashion, winning, 6-1.
"Great start to the tournament," Cash said. "Conditions were not easy today with the wind, but we took an early break to give us momentum to take the first set."
In the second, Lock/Nunez didn't let the Pokes build on that momentum from the first set victory as they jumped on top of Cash/Kadhe 3-2 and would win three-straight games after to win the set, 6-2.
"They came back fighting in the second as we lost a little focus, but by the time the third set tiebreak came around we were back playing our game and ready to go," Cash said.
With both teams splitting the first two sets, the final set would be played as a super-tiebreak.
The All-American duo looked to have their rhythm back as they got out to a 4-2 lead early on and closed out their victory with a 10-6 win in the super-tiebreak.
"We upped our energy levels in the tiebreak and it payed off," Cash said.
Cash/Kadhe will face either San Diego's Jordan Angus/Filip Vittek or Virginia Tech's Andreas Bjerrehus/Joao Monteiro in the round of 16 tomorrow and if the Cowboys win the match they will earn All-American status.
