Cowgirl Quick Hitters
Big 12 Champions ... Again
Oklahoma State rewrote the record books and won the 2016 Big 12 Conference championship at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. OSU was 11 strokes better than second-place Texas. The Cowgirls closed out at 8-under 856, which broke the record for the lowest 54-hole score in Big 12 Championship history by five strokes. The Cowgirls shot 282 on Sunday, which tied for the second-best round ever at a Big 12 Championship. The victory gave the Cowgirls 23 conference titles in program history. The nine Big 12 championships are more than twice as many as any other school, and more than all other current Big 12 programs combined.
Not Bad For A Sophomore
Powered by a final-round 66, OSU sophomore Kenzie Neisen ran away from the field to win her second straight Big 12 individual title - this time by six strokes. Neisen joined fellow Cowgirl Annie Thurman-Young (2004 and 2005) as the only back-to-back Big 12 individual champions in league history. Neisen's 6-under 66 on Sunday tied for the lowest round in Big 12 Championship history, and her 9-under 207 final score broke the previous record by a stroke.
Four And Looking For More
Including the Big 12 Championship, the Cowgirls have won their last four events heading into the NCAA Regional at Shoal Creek Country Club, which is tied for the longest win streak in school history. This is the fourth time OSU has won four straight events, but the first time since 1988-89. The Cowgirls also won four straight events in 1986-87 and 1981-82.
Another Year, Another Regional
This will be OSU's first time to play at Shoal Creek Country Club, but the Cowgirls are hardly strangers to the NCAA Regional. This is OSU's 24th consecutive regional appearance, which is every year since the inception of the regional postseason format in 1993. The Cowgirls will look to advance to the NCAA Championships for the 21st time in program history.
Against The Field
The Cowgirls faced the nation's 30th toughest schedule this season, which pitted them against 11 of the 17 squads at the Shoal Creek Regional, including Alabama, Northwestern, California, Iowa State, Florida State, Tennessee, Purdue and Notre Dame. OSU is 15-7 (68.2 percent) against its opponents at the Shoal Creek Regional.
Heavy Hitters
The Cowgirls boast a 4.86 average on par 5 holes this season, which ranks second in the country behind only Arizona State (4.84). In fact, each of OSU's starting five ranks among the top 85 players in the country on par 5s. Kenzie Neisen leads the OSU par 5 attack with a 4.80 scoring average, which ranks 19th in the country and Linnea Johansson is right behind her in 28th place at 4.82. Overall, OSU's 73.42 team scoring average score ranks seventh in the country.
