Cowboy Tennis Earns Multiple Conference Honors
May 12, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad added to its growing list of awards today as multiple Cowboys received All-Big 12 honors, including All-American Julian Cash, who was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Cash becomes the fifth OSU men's tennis player to win Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after a season where he collected 18 singles victories and 32 doubles wins with Arjun Kadhe. Ranked No. 56 in the country, the England native defeated five ranked opponents, including an impressive straight-set win over No. 7 Andre Goransson of California. The sophomore adds to his list of accolades this season as he received the ITA Central Region Player to Watch award on Tuesday and was named Big 12 Player of the Week twice during the spring. Cash also received at an at-large bid competition to the NCAA Singles Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 25.
Kadhe/Cash, ranked No. 10, were named to the All-Big 12 first team. The All-American duo had an historic season as they won the ITA All-American Doubles Championship back draw title and the 127th Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in March. The duo finished the regular season with 32 doubles victories, including five wins against ranked opponents. This is the second time Kadhe has been named to the first team in doubles as he shared the honor with his former doubles partner and three-time All-American Jakob Sude in 2014. Last Thursday, Kadhe/Cash found out they will be heading to Tulsa on May 25th for the NCAA Doubles Championship after receiving an automatic bid to the 32-duo tournament.
OSU's Lucas Gerch was named to the All-Big 12 second team in singles for the first time in his Cowboy career. The junior had a stellar season at the No. 3 spot for the Pokes as he won 21 matches overall (leads team) and is currently riding a 12-match win streak in singles play.
Jurence Mendoza also earned his first All-Big 12 honor as he was named to the second team with doubles partner Gerch in doubles. Mendoza/Gerch played in only 12 matches so far this season, but each one has been significant as they have played a crucial factor in helping the Cowboys secure the doubles point. Overall, the duo is 9-3 on the year and clinched the doubles point in the Cowboys' first win over Baylor since 2008.
With the regular season and conference tournament complete, the Pokes will look to make some noise in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, which starts on Saturday. Both the Cowboys & Cowgirls were selected to host a regional in the tournament. On the women's side, play will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Greenwood Tennis Center as Arkansas takes on Tulsa. Following that, the Cowgirls will take on Albany at 1 p.m. CT. The men's regional starts on Saturday as Arkansas battles Wichita State at 9 a.m. and the Cowboys faceoff with Bryant at noon CT at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Tickets will start at $5, while students will be admitted for $3. With the Special Olympics in town until Friday, parking will be easier to find at the gravel lot to the north of the Greenwood Tennis Center on McElroy St.
