Cowgirl Sweep UNLV
May 01, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Oklahoma State softball swept UNLV in a doubleheader at Eller Media Field in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The Cowgirls took the second game 11-6 in six innings after defeating the Rebels 4-1 in the first game.
"Every win is huge right now," Coach Kenny Gajewksi said. "I'm just really proud of the way we battled through the unknown. Not knowing if we were going to play, then getting rained out. I see this group as growing up. It's exciting to watch them."
After a low-scoring game to start the doubleheader, the Oklahoma State bats came alive in the second game.
The Cowgirls (25-22) used RBI doubles from Red Reasnor and Dre McKee to take an early 4-0 lead after three innings.
UNLV responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Cowgirl lead to 4-3.
Oklahoma State kept the bats going the next inning, scoring seven runs on six singles to extend its lead to 11-3.
Brandi Needham (6-13) came out of the bullpen and went 2.2 innings to secure series sweep for the Cowgirls and earned the win.
McKee led the way for Oklahoma State at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk.
The first game was a battle of the pitchers, as Kacy Freeze held the Rebels scoreless the first four innings.
Oklahoma State was able to take the early lead with a Madi Sue Montgomery RBI-sacrifice fly to score Vanessa Shippy that gave the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead after one.
The Cowgirls added two runs in the top of the sixth, and one in the seventh to take the 4-1 win.
Freeze (14-8) went the distance in the circle, allowing just five hits to earn the win.
"I think it was important to get off to a quick start," Freeze said. "Because we were running low on time and we had to get the game in. I think we were all ready to play because we were waiting around since yesterday."
Montgomery led the way for the Cowgirls at the plate in the first game, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
