Cowgirls Set Program Record In Win Over Kansas
May 06, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
LAWRENCE, KAN. – Oklahoma State softball's Tiffany Mikkelson went 3-for-4 with a team high four RBIs in a 10-4 win over Kansas on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark.
Mikkelson gave the Cowgirls the start they needed with a powerful three-run home run in the first to give Oklahoma State an early 3-0 lead.
Oklahoma State scored three in the top of the fourth and four in the sixth to secure the 10-4 win to start the three-game series against the Jayhawks and the Cowgirls first conference road win on the season.
With the Mikkelson blast and sophomore Randee O'Donnell's solo shot in the top of the sixth, Oklahoma State set a program record with its 49th home run of the season.
"Over the last week I've seen some way better at bats, and better practice (from Mikkelson)," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I think she's just a kid who is streaky. After her first at bat I thought, well she will get hot here and she had a great game."
After Oklahoma State (26-22 overall, 5-9 Big 12) took a 3-0 lead after one, Kansas responded with three runs of its own in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
The Jayhawks (28-19, 5-8) scored one in the bottom of the third before the Cowgirl offense would come alive.
A three-run RBI double from freshman Taylor Lynch cleared the bases and gave the Cowgirls a 6-4 lead after four.
After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, Oklahoma State scored four runs in the sixth thanks to RBIs from O'Donnell, Mikkelson and junior Kristin Reasnor to extend its lead to 10-4.
Junior Brandi Needham came on in relief and held the Jayhawks scoreless the final two innings to secure the win for Oklahoma State.
Senior Kacy Freeze (15-8) earned the win for the Cowgirls.
Alongside Mikkelson, Oklahoma State had standout performances from Lynch and O'Donnell at the plate. Lynch finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs while O'Donnell went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
"(This win) means we're one step closer to a regional," Mikkelson said. "That's what we want, that's our goal so this was big for us."
