Montgomery's Five RBIs Help Lead Cowgirls To Victory
April 09, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Montgomery finished the game 3-for-4 and ranks second on the team in RBIs with 38 on the season behind senior Tiffany Mikkelson who has 40.
"Hitting is contagious," Montgomery said. "We're all hitting together so it's just working out."
Oklahoma State (19-17 Overall, 2-4 Big 12) once again started the game as well as it could have hoped. Montgomery hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to extend the Cowgirls lead to 3-0, after Mikkelson had a two-RBI single scoring Vanessa Shippy and Taylor Lynch. Â Berkley Faulkner's double later in the inning scored Red Reasnor to give Oklahoma State a 4-0 after the first.
Both teams traded scoreless halves in the second before Iowa State scored four runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4. The Cyclones scored two more in the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. The Cowgirls responded with RBI doubles from Lynch and Montgomery to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
Iowa State (15-21, 0-5) responded with four runs in the top of the fifth and took a commanding 10-6 lead. However, the Cowgirls quickly answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to RBI hits from Jessi Haffner, Shippy and Montgomery.  After a combined 10 runs in the fifth inning, OSU led 12-10.
Cowgirl junior Shea Coats (4-1) held the Cyclones scoreless the final two innings to earn the win in the circle. She finished the day allowing only a hit and no runs in 2.2 innings of action after coming in for Brandi Needham.
"I just wanted to contain the situation," Coats said. "Brandi actually pitched really well. She kind of had some tough breaks go against her. That's our job as a staff, come in and pick each other up. Â Be there for the other one so that was my goal."
Alongside Montgomery, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from Shippy at the plate. She finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
"It's been a rollercoaster season," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I'd like to get off. I've had enough of this ride. I'd like to be able to win this game 12-2 or 12-4. But I think it's prepared the team. They're iron tough. They've been through a lot. They're not afraid; I don't care what the score is they're going to give me everything that they've got. I think as you go through this, we're playing a lot of young kids, we're getting a ton of experience that will only help us in the long run."
