Cowgirls Sweep Iowa State
April 10, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Stillwater---- Darcy Taylor went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Oklahoma State to a 10-2 run-rule win in five innings and a series sweep over Iowa State on Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.
The redshirt junior finished with two runs and two RBIs, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cowgirls scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-1 lead before Tiffany Mikkelson's walk-off walk with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth sealed the win for the Cowgirls.
"The first two I kind of got lucky," Taylor said. "They just kind of dropped in. The last one I was just trying to see my pitch and be patient."
Oklahoma State (20-17 overall, 3-4 Big 12) held a 2-0 lead through two innings before Iowa State (15-21, 0-6) scored one in the top of the third to cut the lead to 2-1. Freshman Madi Sue Montgomery's RBI-sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning moved the Cowgirl lead to 3-1.
Freshman Taylor Lynch extended her school-record hit streak to 20 games with her three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cowgirls a 6-1 lead.
Senior Kacy Freeze led the way in the circle for the Cowgirls. The senior went five innings, allowing only four hits and a walk while striking out three Cyclones. Improved to 11-6 on the season with the win.
"I'm gaining confidence," Freeze said. "I'm also fixing mistakes in the game in between innings. I think that's helping being able to go through the whole game with less mistakes."
Alongside Taylor, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from Lynch at the plate. She finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
"It feels good," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Just for this club to know we can win games like this. We're starting to pitch a little bit better. We played clean on the defensive side and continue to take good at bats. I think it's a good boost for us to continue to build. It's not easy to sweep in any conference; I don't care who you play. It's tough. It's a big step."
The series sweep was Oklahoma State's first conference sweep since 2012 when it swept the Cyclones in Stillwater.
The Cowgirls are now 8-0 when holding opponents to two or less runs, and 11-1 at home. Oklahoma State also improved to 18-1 when leading after four innings.
