Cowboys Drop Big 12 Opener In Austin
April 08, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad dropped its Big 12 opener to No. 17 Texas 4-0 at the Polo Tennis & Fitness Club on Friday.
The loss puts the Cowboys at 16-4 on the year and 0-1 in Big 12 play. OSU has now lost 11-straight matches to the Longhorns (16-7; 1-1 Big 12) with the Pokes' last win coming in 2007.
Playing for the first time this season, Arjun Kadhe/Tristan Meraut struggled to get going in doubles as they fell to George Goldhoff/Julian Zlobinsky, 6-3, on court two.
Pokes Lukas Finzelberg/Julian Cash looked solid in their doubles debut and started out hot as they led 4-1 on court three early before Texas duo Adrian Ortiz/Michael Riechmann defeated Cowboys Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza, 6-3, on court one to clinch the doubles point and give Texas a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
With the doubles point gone, OSU needed to win four of six singles matches to win the match. Mendoza would lead the charge for the Pokes with a quick 6-3 first set win on court six. Gerch followed with another first set victory on court three, but the Longhorns continued to get crucial set points, which led to first set wins on four courts.
After a tough first set loss, Finzelberg struggled in the second set as he lost on court five to Michael Riechmann, 7-5, 6-1, putting Texas up 2-0.
On court one, Cash dropped his match to No. 87 George Goldhoff in straight-sets, 7-6(0), 6-3, to extend the Texas lead to 3-0.
However, the deficit wouldn't phase the Pokes as they looked to be in control on courts two, three and six before Adrian Ortiz clinched the 4-0 victory for Texas with a win over Meraut, 7-5, 6-2.
After a tough loss to the Longhorns, the Pokes will look to rebound against No. 2 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. This will be the second meeting between OSU and the Horned Frogs as TCU took the first meeting this season, 4-3.
