OSU Finishes Penn Relays, Rock Chalk Classic
April 30, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – The OSU track and field program had success in Philadelphia and Lawrence, Kansas, this weekend with the Cowgirl 4X800-meter team finishing runner-up at the Penn Relays thanks to All-American Kaela Edwards' 2:00.83 split on the anchor leg Saturday.
OSU sent Kaylee Dodd, Clara Nichols, Anna Boyert and Edwards to the track for the relay, and the Pokes finished in 8:26.34, just three-tenths of a second off the first place time.
"Kaylee ran a great opening leg for us," coach Dave Smith said. "There were about 25,000 people out there watching, and I think that may have affected Clara in her leg. She went out really fast and kind of faded at the end because of it, but then Anna ran a good leg and Kaela was less than a second away from becoming a Penn Relays legend."
Edwards took the baton from Boyert with the Cowgirls in fifth place, and ran the fastest 800 of the day to bring the Cowgirls to within striking distance before running out of track on the home stretch.
"If there were a few more meters in that race, Kaela would have caught Georgetown," Smith said. "Having Kaela Edwards as your anchor means you're never out of a race."
The 4X800 came just two days after the Cowgirls took second in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:17.94.
In the DMR, the Cowgirls led off with Savannah Camacho in the 1,200-meter leg, then Nichols took the baton for the 400, Dodd for the 800 and Edwards took the mile anchor leg.
The Cowboys finished fourth in the DMR Friday, with Matthew Fayers, Tyler Jackson, Tre'Tez Kinnaird and Josh Thompson taking to the track for OSU.
Back in the Midwest, the Pokes competed at the day-long Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Cowboys came away with two wins, both from the sprinters, while the Cowgirls took wins in the 800 and shot put.
Sharod Selph had a hand in both of the men's victories Saturday, taking the gold in the 100-meter dash with a 10.61 then running the anchor leg for the winning Cowboy 4X100-meter team.
"The men's relay had a great day," sprints coach Diego Flaquer said. "I think they ran a decent time considering the weather and conditions at the time of the race."
Abbie Hetherington had one of the two Cowgirl wins at Kansas. She won the 800 in 2:08.54, beating the second-place finisher by a second. The time puts the Hetherington just outside the top-10 in the conference, but OSU is well represented on the list, now holding five of the top-12 places and the top two.
All-American Chase Ealey had the other win on the day, adding to her astounding outdoor season. Her throw of 16.97m/55-8.25 on her second attempt was good enough to take the crown.
"The throwers are continuing to develop," throws coach Lucais Mackay said. "We've put together a lot of consistent performances lately, and that's what we need going into the Big 12 Championships."
Arlando Brewer-Johnson continued his steady improvement, topping his second personal best in as many weeks. This time, Brewer-Johnson ran a 21.59 in the 200-meter dash for a new career best.
OSU's weekend continues Sunday with a small group taking to Cobb Track in Palo Alto, California, for the Payton Jordan Invitational.
