Cowgirls Fall to Texas
April 23, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
AUSTIN---- Oklahoma State softball jumped out to an early lead but the Cowgirls fell 5-3 to Texas at Red & Charline McCombs Field on Saturday.
Â
Texas scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to secure the series win.
Â
"Yesterday we came out flat and today I knew we were going to come out and be crazy," Vanessa Shippy said. "That's our team. We've got to be scrappy and come out energized. We did that today; we just couldn't finish the game. There are little things we need to work on. We're still a young team and that's a good team over there."
Â
Oklahoma State (22-21 overall, 4-8 Big 12) started well offensively and in the circle with Brandi Needham. Shippy's two-out RBI double gave the Cowgirls a quick 2-0 lead after two innings.
Â
Needham pitched well the first four innings, holding the Longhorns scoreless and allowing only one hit.
Â
The Cowgirls took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Jessi Haffner two-out walk with bases loaded. Texas (29-13, 4-6) rallied back scoring three in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Â
Shippy led the way at the plate for the Cowgirls, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs. Needham (5-12) took the loss for Oklahoma State in 5.1 innings of action.
Â
"I felt (Needham) was rolling along," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I think as the game went on they had kind of worn her down with some long at bats. She's got to be someone who stays out of the middle of the strike zone and she did that. She gave us a chance. Â We were really good through four and the wheels kind of came off there in the fifth and sixth."
----
Up Next: Oklahoma State concludes its three-game set with Texas in Austin tomorrow. First pitch is set for noon and can be seen on the Longhorn Network or the Watch ESPN app.
