Cowgirls Drop Series Finale At Texas
April 24, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
AUSTIN ---- Oklahoma State softball's comeback effort fell just short in an 8-7 loss to Texas at Red & Charline McCombs Field on Sunday.
Â
Freshman Madi Sue Montgomery's solo home run in the top of the sixth tied the game at 7-7, but Texas scored one in the bottom of the inning to secure the win and series sweep.
Â
"The taste of victory is sweet," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Until you get a taste of it and learn to close out these close games you don't know what it tastes like. We've got to get a taste of that in these conference games and figure out a way to close this thing down."
Â
The Cowgirls (22-22 overall, 4-9 Big 12) and Longhorns went back and forth from the start, as both teams scored runs in four of the seven innings.
Â
Oklahoma State got on the board first with an RBI double from Freshman Taylor Lynch in the top of the third to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead. Texas (30-13, 5-6) responded in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Â
Both teams scored one in the fourth before the Cowgirls scored three in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 6-6. The Longhorns hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 7-6.
Â
After the home run in the bottom of the sixth, Texas held Oklahoma State scoreless in the top of the seventh to get the win.
Â
The Cowgirls had a standout performance from sophomore Maddi Holcomb at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Alongside Holcomb, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from sophomore Vanessa Shippy, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Â
Brandi Needham (5-13) took the loss for the Cowgirls in one inning of action.
Â
"I'm so proud of our team and how we've been fighting," Holcomb said. "Hats off to Texas but our team, we're making big steps and I know every day we step on field it's a new game. Nobody remembers we just lost. Everyone is playing their hearts out every time."

Up Next: The Cowgirls return home for an out-of-conference game against Arkansas at Cowgirl Stadium on Apr. 26. First pitch is set for 6:30 and can be seen on Fox Sports Plus.
