Cowgirl Comeback Falls Short In Loss to Texas
April 22, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
AUSTIN – Oklahoma State softball's late comeback effort fell just short in a 4-2 loss to Texas at Red & Charline McCombs Field on Friday.
The Cowgirls scored two runs in the top of the seventh after a tough night of good defensive plays and pitching from the Longhorns, but it wasn't enough as Texas took the opening game of the three-game set.
"We've got to be scrappy," Vanessa Shippy said. "(Texas) is a good team, a really well coached team. I thought we came out with low energy and kind of flat and we still had a 4-2 game. We had a good game and we weren't at our best. It's anyone's game tomorrow, we've just got to come out with more energy."
Oklahoma State (22-20 overall, 4-7 Big 12) was in the game from the start, and limited Texas to a 1-0 lead through three innings. Kacy Freeze pitched well throughout the game, but the Longhorns found a way to score three more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Shippy was the Cowgirls first hit of the night with her single in the top of the sixth, and the Oklahoma State bats would continue the next inning.
Red Reasnor started the seventh with a double off the left field fence, and was followed by a Darcy Taylor walk to move runners to first and second.
The Cowgirls cut the deficit to 4-1 after Maddi Holcomb reached base on a fielding error. Shippy cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI single to left field before Texas hung on for the victory.
"First of all give a lot of credit to (Tiarra Davis)," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "She was really good. We just couldn't get the barrel on the ball. But I thought as the game went on I thought we started making better adjustments and hitting the ball hard. It's a Friday night in conference play. These games are always tough"
Shippy led the way for Oklahoma State at the plate. She finished the night 2-for-3 with an RBI. Freeze (12-8) took the loss for the Cowgirls in six innings of action.
