Cowgirls Look To Secure Big 12 Championship In Kansas

The Cowgirls improved to 7-0 in Big 12 play over the weekend with a victories at home against Texas Tech and TCU.

The Cowgirls have a chance to clinch the Big 12 Championship with a win against either the Wildcats or Jayhawks this weekend. It would be the first regular season title for the Cowgirls since 2001.

Adamovic Named Player of the Week
Katarina Adamovic was named Big 12 Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Â
It's the first player of the week honor for Adamovic during her Cowgirl career. She and partner Vladica Babic clinched the doubles point for the Cowgirls in the matches against Texas Tech and TCU.

Adamovic also added a win in singles by defeating Marie Norris of TCU, 6-4, 6-1. Adamovic's victory against TCU clinched the match and a share of the Big 12 Championship for the Cowgirls.

The match also served as senior day for Cowgirls Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente. Both Alvarez and Laurente helped clinch a share of the title with wins in singles. Alvarez defeated Alexis Pereira, 6-4, 6-3. Laurente defeated Olaya Garrido-Rivas, 6-4, 6-4.

The Cowgirls own 14 wins against teams that have appeared in the Oracle/ITA rankings so far this season through 23 matches.

The Cowgirls also own two wins against Alabama, who was ranked as high as No. 13 in the country. The Cowgirls shutout No. 14 Texas Tech last weekend.

13 of the 19 Cowgirl wins have come at home and the Pokes have outscored opponents, 97-28, through the first 23 matches of the spring season.

The Pokes have recorded nine shutouts inside the Greenwood Tennis Center this season.

Kansas enters Sunday's match with a 15-5 record, including a 5-2 mark in conference play. The Jayhawks are currently third in the Big 12 standings behind the Cowgirls and Texas Longhorns.

Carla Tur Mari's 69 wins are good enough for the 8th spot on the career wins list during the Big 12 era, Viktoriya Lushkova's 64 wins are good for the 10th spot and Katarina Adamovic is currently 16th on the career wins list.
