Cowgirls Crowned Big 12 Champions
April 22, 2016 | Cowgirl Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kansas – For the first time since 2001 the Oklahoma State women's tennis team won the Big 12 Conference regular season title with a 4-0 victory against Kansas State at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
Friday marked the first conference championship for the Cowgirls under head coach Chris Young. The championship is the third conference title for the Cowgirls during the Big 12 era.
"Overall, it was a great day for our program and for these players, who have worked so hard to accomplish something special," Young said. "I thought our seniors came out and set the tone early in doubles with the way they continued to compete and lead by example."
The Cowgirls (20-4; 8-0 Big 12) are undefeated in their last five regular season meetings against the Wildcats. OSU is also undefeated in their last nine matches and five of those matches have been shutouts.
"I think to do this on the road, against a team that had nothing to lose, I give a lot of credit to all of our opponents," Young said. "All of the pressure was on our girls and they've been handling the pressure well the last few weeks."
OSU was picked to finish second in the Big 12 preseason poll, but are the only undefeated team in conference play as of Saturday.
The doubles point continued to belong to the Cowgirls, as OSU only needed two courts to secure the first point of the day.
"Doubles has been a strong suit for us all season long," assistant coach Matt Manasse said. "We have three very capable teams and we know we have a solid chance on every court"
Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic, ranked No. 63, earned the first victory of the day for the Cowgirls by defeating Livia Cirnu and Carolina Costamagna, 6-1.
Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente clinched the point for the Cowgirls at the No. 1 position by defeating Millie Stretton and Ana Garcia Navas, 6-1.
"I thought Kelsey [Laurente] and I needed to step up, we had been struggling a little bit recently," Alvarez said. "It was a really good win for both of us."
The Cowgirls managed to carry momentum from doubles to singles, as they overpowered the Wildcats to clinch the conference championship.
Carla Tur Mari clinched the championship for the Cowgirls; despite not being sure her match would be able to finish. After trading games back and forth in the second set, the junior took down Iva Bago, 6-4, 6-3.
"The final point was such a relief because I knew we had won the Big 12," Tur Mari said. "We played really well today and went out and got it."
Babic recorded her second win in a row to give the Cowgirls a commanding 3-0 lead against the Wildcats. The sophomore found herself down 2-0 in the first set, but managed to battle for a straight-set victory against Garcia Navas, 6-4, 6-2.
Viktoriya Lushkova dominated at the No. 3 position to start singles play for the Cowgirls. The junior improved to 17-1 in the spring with her victory against Costamagna, 6-1, 6-0.
The Cowgirls had been close to a conference title the last few years, but Alvarez said this Cowgirl team was determined to bring the trophy to Stillwater.
"I've been here four years and we've been so close to winning the conference title so many times," Alvarez said. "It's a really nice feeling to win it, especially with this team because we are really close."
The Cowgirls return to action on Sunday against the Kansas Jayhawks at noon.
