Mikkelson Has Historic Night In Loss to Texas Tech
April 02, 2016 | Cowgirl Softball
Â
Her second, and record-breaking home run, was key to Oklahoma State's comeback effort. In the top of the sixth, she hit a grand slam over the left field fence to cut the Texas Tech deficit to 19-18.
Â
"(Breaking the record) means a lot," she said. "I wouldn't have wanted it to go any other way. I would want to hit it in this game, hit a grand slam run and into my teammates. That's all I wanted."
Â
Oklahoma State advanced a runner to first in the top half of the seventh, but Texas Tech wouldn't allow a run to score to seal the victory.
Â
The Cowgirls once again started fast, and took an early 1-0 after the first inning. Texas Tech's eight runs in the bottom half of the third gave the Red Raiders an eventual 16-6 lead that Oklahoma State would work to cut the rest of the night.
Â
Trailing 17-8 in the top of the of the fifth, Oklahoma State batted around and scored five runs on two hits to cut the deceit to 17-13 lead. The Cowgirls scored five more in the top of the sixth, capped off with Mikkelson's grand slam, to cut the score to 19-18.
Â
Mikkelson led the way at the plate for Oklahoma State. She finished four-for-four with seven RBIs, a new school record for RBIs in a single game.
Â
"She's just a steady kid," Coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Just a kid I love. I'm excited for her and for her to have (the record) behind her. Because I think these things really weigh on kids. They know it's there even though we don't talk about it much. She knows that's there and now she's got it passed her. She's been red hot this past three weeks and I'm looking forward to her having a strong finish."
Â
Alongside Mikkelson, Oklahoma State also had a standout performance from Vanessa Shippy at the plate. She finished three-for-four with three RBIs to help lead the Cowgirl comeback.
Â
Oklahoma State now turns its attention to tomorrow's series finale against Texas Tech.
Â
"It's almost like a must-win game," Gajewski said. "We've got to win tomorrow. We need a big performance from Kacy (Freeze) and we need our hitters to go out there and continue to take quality swings."
