Three Cowboy Duos Advance To Round Of 16
March 04, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
LA JOLLA, California – Three Oklahoma State men's doubles teams clinched a spot in the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship round of 16 on Friday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
The Pacific Coast Doubles Championship is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and includes past winners such as Arthur Ashe and John McEnroe. Last year, Cowboys Lucas Gerch/Nicolai Ferrigno won the tournament in its 126th year.
This season, All-American duo Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash entered the historic tournament as the top seed and looked to make it back-to-back years an Oklahoma State doubles team claimed the title. In their first day at the tournament, the Cowboys defeated UC Irvine's Caryl Hernandez/Luca Marquard and Baylor's Samuel May/Tyler Stayer in the first and second rounds, 8-3.
In the round of 32, Kadhe/Cash took care of business against UC Davis' Alec Adamson/Adam Levie by beating the Aggie duo, 8-4, to secure a spot in the sweet 16.
"We played pretty fast and the matches went by pretty quickly," Kadhe said. "I hope we come out with the same intensity tomorrow."
Oklahoma State's Temur Ismailov/Lucas Gerch would be the next Cowboy duo in the round of 16 as they swept through the first three rounds of the tournament. Ismailov/Gerch faced a tough task in the third round of the tournament by matching up with second-seeded Guilherme Ristow Hadlich/Gabriel Sidney of Pepperdine. The match figured to be a tight one, but the Pokes jumped out in front and didn't look back as they won, 8-2.
Cowboys Lukas Finzelberg/Jurence Mendoza became the third Cowboy duo to find themselves in the round of 16, as the sophomores grinded out two tough wins in the early rounds before shutting out San Diego's Pratt Keerasuntonpong/James Ponwith, 8-0.
Pokes Nathan Roper/Tristan Meraut won their first round match, but would fall in the second round to Stanford's Thomas Fawcett/Maciek Romanwicz, 8-3.
Tomorrow, Oklahoma State's Finzelberg/Mendoza have an early start at 9 a.m. PT with Kadhe/Cash and Ismailov/Gerch following them at 10:30 a.m.
