Martin Named Wade Trophy Finalist
March 24, 2016 | Cowgirl Basketball
ATLANTA — Oklahoma State's Brittney Martin has been named one of 15 finalists in contention for The Wade Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding NCAA Division I women's basketball player. The announcement was made by The Wade Trophy Committee and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
"The WBCA applauds these outstanding student-athletes for being named finalists for women's basketball's highest honor, the Wade Trophy," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "These finalists have demonstrated excellence on the basketball court, in addition to a commitment to academics, sportsmanship, and ethical conduct. They captivated national audiences with their talent throughout the season and have left their mark on our game. We honor these individuals, their teams, and coaches."
Earlier this season, the Syracuse, Utah native became the first Cowgirl to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year and was also the first OSU player named the league's defensive player of the year.
On five occasions, she was named Big 12 Player of the Week and was named the College Sports Madness Big 12 Player of the Week four times. Martin was also a first-team Academic All-Big 12 pick this season.
A unanimous all-league pick for the second year in a row, Martin was named to the league's all-defensive squad for the second consecutive season.
Martin is on pace to become the first player in Big 12 history to finish as its leader in scoring, rebounding and steals in the same season. The senior averaged 20.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals per contest and finished the year with 20 double-doubles.
The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members consisting of leading basketball coaches, journalists and administrators. The committee will select the winner of The Wade Trophy from among these 15 finalists who also are named to the 10-member WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Team when it is chosen in April. The WBCA will officially announce The Wade Trophy winner during the WBCA Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in Indianapolis.
