STILLWATER – The No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowgirls are just a few days away from opening up their spring season at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
The Cowgirls look to continue where they left off, a third pace finish at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., and put forth all the hard work during what head coach Courtney Jones calls the "Building Season."
"Coach Par [Nilsson] and I came up with that term 'Building Season' because we thought it is an area to build and improve," Jones said. "We as coaches believe in our team, and we are always looking each day on how we can learn and improve."
The "Building Season" is the time period between the fall and spring season, which is about a three-month break where teams aren't traveling and competing.
Jones along with Nilsson take full advantage of the break using every opportunity to find ways they can make the team even better.
"There are things that you can work on specifically in your game when you aren't competing and playing in tournament play," Jones said. "That can be easier to make changes if you have a little bit of a break from competition. I do think it can be an advantage."
Redshirt junior Linnea Johansson says the building season is important because it allows her to work on everything about her game.
"These three months are time to build up everything," Johansson said. "To work on the technique, to get stronger in the gym, to work on all those weaknesses and build those up and to keep maintaining all the good parts of your game."
The favorable Oklahoma winter weather allows the Cowgirls to be out at Karsten Creek Golf Club every day during the "Building Season," which is another added benefit of the break.
"We are very fortunate here. I have fellow friends and coaches where they have to take their teams on trips to go and practice where our girls are out here every day working hard," Jones said. "There are some cold days but that also makes you a little bit tougher both mentally and physically and you're prepared for any sort of condition."
