Cowboys See Road Tilt At Tech As An Opportunity
February 02, 2016 | Cowboy Basketball
Oklahoma State basketball has an opportunity this week.
The Cowboys have an opportunity for a momentum-building winning streak after a 74-63 win in Auburn over the Tigers in the final game of the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday.
"It was great," Travis Ford said. "It's always good to get that feeling. To go into a game that was on a pretty big stage as far as what the day was about and to go into an arena that was sold out for a game that we had been told by them had been promoted for two or three weeks, and to play how we did from be  ginning to end for 40 minutes. I was proud of our team. I thought we were really locked in mentally and physically for 40 minutes as much as we have been all year long."
Although the Tigers have struggled this season on the road, they've played exceptionally well in the Auburn Arena. The Tigers brought a 7-2 home recorded into the game, including a recent upset over Kentucky.
"That was a nice crowd," Chris Olivier said. "It was sold out. That team, they beat Kentucky (there). We wanted to come out and compete and we were able to get the win."
Olivier said the team sat down together the night before the game, and discussed what it would take to come back to Stillwater with a win. The team wrote down what they believed had to be done.
The list was simple, but detail oriented.
"Come ready to play and practice," Olivier said. " Push each other. Pay attention to details on the scouting report, because that's big. Just be together. No playing around, just have to take it serious."
The Cowboys took the list to heart, and executed. There was no playing around, as they led for all but 14 seconds when the game was tied at zero to start the game.
Oklahoma State never trailed in the game. All wins are good for confidence, but Olivier said this particular win was a much needed one.
"It gives us a lot of (confidence)," he said. "We got that one. We just have to keep building on it."
The Cowboys have a chance to build on the win right away, with a trip to Lubbock tomorrow night to take on the Red Raiders. Although he said the win was important, Ford said the road win won't necessarily lead more success simply because the Cowboys won. He said Oklahoma State will have to continue to build on the win, and as always learn from the game.
"it gives us something to refer back to," he said. "I've always said history doesn't mean anything if you don't learn from it. Good or bad. So it gives us something to refer back to. I talked to our team about you've proven you can do it."Â
