February 12, 2016 | Cowboy Basketball
TORONTO, Canada – Legendary Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton was named one of 14 finalists for Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, it was announced as a part of the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities in Toronto.
The 2016 class will be announced on April 4 in Houston at the NCAA Final Four, and a finalist needs at least 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election.
The only coach with more than 800 wins to not be inducted into the hall, Sutton took the Cowboys to the Final Four in 1995 and 2004, as well Arkansas in 1978. He posted a 368-151 (.709) record in 16 seasons at the helm of the Oklahoma State program, and has 804 career wins in his career.
He was a four-time national coach of the year (1977, 1978, 1986, 1995) and eight time conference coach of the year (1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1986, 1993, 1998, 2004), and was the first coach to lead four different schools to the NCAA Tournament.
A 1958 graduate of Oklahoma State, Sutton inherited an OSU program that had made just one NCAA Tournament appearance in the previous 25 seasons, and took them to the Big Dance 13 times over the next 16 years.
He also helped Creighton, Arkansas, and Kentucky reach the NCAA Tournament. In 37 seasons as a Division I head coach, Sutton went to three Final Fours, six Elite Eights and 12 Sweet Sixteen appearances.
