Cash and Kadhe Fall At USTA/ITA National Indoors
November 03, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Oklahoma State tennis' top-ranked duo of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe bowed out of the main draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday.
Cash and Kadhe earned an automatic bid into the prestigious tournament due to winning the ITA Central Regional doubles title on October 24. The duo rattled off five consecutive wins and took home the crown, becoming the first Oklahoma State duo to win the event since Aleksey Bessonov and Cowboy legend Oleksandr Nedovyesov won the tournament in 2009.
In their Round-of-16 matchup with UC Santa Barbara's Morgan Mays and Simon Freund, Cash and Kadhe stormed out of the gates early in the matchup as they quickly found themselves on top of the UCSB duo, 4-1, in the first set before Mays and Freund showed their mettle and battled back to take the set in a back-and-forth tiebreak. The nation's No. 1 duo started to find their rhythm in the second set however, as Cash and Kadhe collected a massive break point to take a 3-2 lead. From there they rattled off three more games and earned the split with Mays and Freund, forcing a decisive third-set super tiebreak.
With a spot in the quarterfinals on the line, the two tandems continued to push each other as they had for the duration of the match. In the end though, Mays and Freund would have just enough in the tank to pull out the win and knock off Cash and Kadhe, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (8).
The loss sends Cash and Kadhe into tomorrow's consolation bracket where they will square off with TCU's No. 41-ranked Trevor Johnson and Reese Stadler. That match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
