STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's basketball team extended its non-conference home winning streak to 52 as the Cowgirls bested Northern Iowa, 81-57, in front of 2,153 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Wednesday.
With the victory OSU improves to 5-0 this season, marking the fifth time the Cowgirls have achieved that feat during head coach Jim Littell's tenure.
The Cowgirls stormed out of the gates in the first quarter as Kaylee Jensen and Mandy Coleman combined for nine points in the first five minutes of action. Midway through the quarter, Jensen drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key, which Coleman followed with a steal and a fast-break layup on the ensuing possession to put the Cowgirls on top, 13-6.
Jensen and Coleman anchored a dominant performance down low for the Cowgirls as OSU outscored UNI, 44-12, in the paint on Wednesday. Jensen finished the contest with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while Coleman tallied double-digit points for the third time this season as she finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The second quarter saw the Cowgirls continue to grow their lead as freshman Rodrea Echols got the action started with five quick points. OSU's first-half performance also saw some great play defensively as the Cowgirls held UNI scoreless for the final 4:23 of the second quarter and sent OSU into the half up 47-26.
Diana Omozee capped off an impressive first 20 minutes of action for OSU with a buzzer-beating layup that came just after she recorded her second steal of the half. The senior drained a jumper on OSU's first possession of the second half to reach double digits for a third straight game.
Omozee set her career high just a few minutes later when she made another tough jumper to help increase her team's lead. She finished the contest with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor.
OSU's defense continued to shine in the second half as the Cowgirls once again held the Panthers off the scoreboard, this time for a stretch of more than five minutes during the third quarter. Katelyn Loecker was one of the driving forces for OSU on the defensive end as she blocked a career-high three shots and snagged two steals.
Loecker also helped guide the Cowgirls' offense as she dished out a career high five assists against the Panthers on Wednesday. The senior also tallied four points during the game as she was one of nine different Cowgirls to score during the win.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Rice. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m. inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
