November 19, 2016 | Cowboy Wrestling
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Four Oklahoma State wrestlers picked up titles Saturday at the Joe Parisi Open, hosted by Lindenwood University at Hyland Arena.
Â
Wrestling unattached, Jacobe Smith had the highlight of the day, pinning No. 7 Zac Brunson of Illinois in the third period of the quarterfinals on his way to claiming the top spot at 174. That was the second of two falls on the day for the two-time NJCAA Champion, who went 4-0 to claim his third open title since arriving in Stillwater. Smith has been impressive since joining the Cowboys this fall, boasting a 12-0 overall record in his redshirt season with seven of those victories coming by fall.
Â
Redshirt freshman Tristan Moran picked up his second open title of the season, going 4-0 in the 141-pound open division to come out on top. After three decisions to advance to the finals, Moran pinned Trevor Feagans of SIU-Edwardsville to clinch the top spot.
Â
The 149-pound open bracket set up nicely for the Pokes, as Jonce Blaylock and Geordan Martinez, who was wrestling unattached, met in the finals. Martinez tallied three bonus-point wins, including a pair of falls in the first and second rounds on his way to the finals, but it was Blaylock that would come out on top in a 5-2 decision.
Â
Derek White wrapped things up for the Cowboys, taking the 197-pound title. Boosting his overall mark to 8-2 on the season, White won four matches Saturday, dropping Chattanooga's Scottie Boykin in a 3-2 decision in the finals.
Â
In the freshman and sophomore Black division, unattached freshman Ethan Andersen would finish second at 285. Andersen got off to a hot start, pinning Cody Curnutt of Drury and Russell Coats of NEO in the first period of his first two matches. Andersen advanced to the finals where he fell to Demetrius Thomas of Williams Baptist College in a 13-3 major decision.
Â
Andrew Marsden finished fifth at 184-pounds, wrestling unattached. Marsden recorded two falls and a major decision in the opening three rounds to advance to the semifinals where he would come up short to Chattanooga's Bryce Carr in a tight, 6-3 decision. Marsden would recover in the fifth-place match, however, pinning Central Oklahoma's John Finn early in the second period.
Â
At 133 pounds, Lincoln Olson advanced to the semifinals where he would fall by major decision to No. 3 Zane Richards of Illinois. Olson would fall in the fifth-place match to Philip Laux of Iowa to record a sixth-place finish.
Â
The Cowboys will return to dual action next weekend when they travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on No. 16 Minnesota on Nov. 27 at 1 p.m.
