Cowboy Tandem Secures Spot In All-American Back Draw Finals
October 09, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State tennis' No. 1-ranked duo of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe picked up their third win over a ranked foe to advance to the finals of the doubles back draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Sunday.
Cash and Kadhe have gone head-to-head with some of the nation's toughest competition in their first matches of the 2016-17 season, including defeating No. 13 Felix Corwin and Matic Spec of Minnesota in Sunday's semifinals. The victory over the nation's No. 13-ranked tandem marks the highest ranked opponent that Cash and Kadhe have defeated as a team. Last year the duo knocked off seven ranked foes, including two that were ranked inside of the ITA"s top 25.
The Cowboy duo, looking for its third win over a ranked opponent in as many days, found themselves in a tight contest with Corwin and Spec as the two tandems traded games in the first set. With the match knotted at 5-5, Cash and Kadhe showed why they are the nation's No. 1 team as they rallied out of a 0-40 hole to hold serve and take a 6-5 lead in the first set. The Cowboys then broke the nation's 13th-ranked tandem for a second time to lock up the first set, 7-5.
The two doubles teams continued to trade games throughout a majority of the second set as Cash/Kadhe and Corwin/Spec found themselves knotted at 5-5 once again. Much like the first set though, the top-ranked Cowboys pulled away from the Minnesota tandem as they held serve to take a 6-5 lead before collecting another break point to clinch the straight-set victory, 7-5, 7-5.
Cash and Kadhe won the ITA All-American Championships' back draw title last season and will now have the opportunity to defend their title in tomorrow's championship match where they will take on Rice's Tommy Bennett and David Warren, who are ranked No. 8 by the ITA.
If the tandem can win their second consolation championship, they will receive an automatic entry into the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship, which will be held Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
