Finzelberg Advances As Qualifying Play Concludes In Tulsa
October 04, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State men's tennis' Lukas Finzelberg defeated two ranked opponents on Tuesday to advance through qualifying play at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Finzelberg will now advance into the main draw where he will join his fellow Cowboy, Julian Cash, who earned an automatic bid due to his No. 29 ranking. The pair will be the first Cowboys to compete in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships since Oleksandr Nedovyesov was the event's top seed in 2008.
In his first matchup of the day, Finzelberg faced off with Texas' Harrison Scott, who entered this week's national championship ranked No. 71 by the ITA.
The German international took care of business quickly as he recorded his fourth straight-set victory of the fall season, defeating Scott, 6-2, 6-3. In his second contest of the day, the Cowboy faced another ranked foe, this time taking on No. 92 Martin Joyce of Ohio State. Against the Buckeye, Finzelberg faced an uphill climb after dropping the first set, but, much like in his match on Monday, was able to rally back to capture the final two sets and knock off Joyce, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Both the singles and doubles main draws at this week's tournament will feature Cowboys as Cash and Finzelberg compete in singles action and then the nation's top-ranked tandem of Cash and Kadhe take part in doubles. Both main draws are slated to begin on Thursday and fans can follow all of the action from Tulsa live on flotennis.com.
Jurence Mendoza was the only other Cowboy to collect a win on Tuesday as he cruised to victory against Princeton's Alex Day, 6-2, 6-0, while Arjun Kadhe and Lucas Gerch both dropped their back-and-forth contests to Minnesota's Felix Corwin and No. 86 Kai Lemke of Memphis, respectively.
There will be no matches played on Wednesday as the competitors have the day off to recover and prepare for the beginning of the main draw on Thursday. For all information regarding draws, match times or results, visit the ITA All-American Championships' event page .
