STILLWATER – Oklahoma State tennis' top-ranked duo of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe advanced to the finals of the ITA Central Regional Championships after picking up their fourth win of the week at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday.
The nation's No. 1-ranked duo faced one of their toughest tests yet as they went up against one of Arkansas' most formidable duos - Michael Redlicki and Jose Salazar - in Sunday's semifinal.
Cash and Kadhe put on a clinic in the first set of their matchup with the Arkansas duo, snagging three break points en route to winning the set. In the second set the story remained much the same as the pair hammered serves and returned seemingly everything the Razorbacks sent their way. Cash and Kadhe showcased once again why they were named the nation's top doubles duo as they rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Monday's final will be an early-season Bedlam matchup as the Cowboy duo will square off with Oklahoma's Alex Ghilea and Spencer Papa at 11 a.m. That match will follow the singles final between Minnesota's Matic Spec and Salazar, which is scheduled to be played at 10 a.m.
While Cash and Kadhe put on another impressive display, the Cowboys bowed out of singles play on Sunday as both Cash and Jurence Mendoza saw their runs at the Central Regional come to an end.
Cash won his first matchup of the day with ease as he cruised through Oklahoma's No. 50-ranked Spencer Papa, 6-1, 6-4, in an early edition of Bedlam. That win moved Cash into the semifinals for a second straight year, but that was as far as the Englishman would go in the tournament. In his semifinal matchup, Cash struggled to find momentum against Salazar and ultimately dropped the contest, 6-4, 6-3.
Mendoza also squared off with a Razorback on Sunday as he met Redlicki, the nation's 11th-ranked player, in the quarterfinals.
It was a tough first set for Mendoza, but he rallied back in the second, winning six straight games to split sets with Redlicki. The excitement on the court only continued as the Cowboy and the Razorback exchanged the lead throughout the decisive set.
Mendoza seemed to flip the switch when he found himself trailing 2-0 to Redlicki in the third as he rattled off three consecutive games to take the lead and put the No. 11 ranked player on his heels. Redlicki responded though and took the next three games before ultimately closing it out and ending Mendoza's run, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Although the Cowboys will only be competing in doubles action, Monday will mark the final day of competition at this year's ITA Central Region Championships. Tomorrow's schedule will consist of the singles and doubles finals, beginning with singles at 10 a.m.
