STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team continued to impress at the ITA Central Region Championships as the Cowboys picked up three more wins on Friday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
An action-packed Saturday saw the Cowboys send two singles competitors and the nation's top-ranked doubles duo advance into the next rounds.
Jurence Mendoza picked up the first win of the day for the Cowboys as he bested UMKC's Airam Castellano in a thrilling match.
Mendoza struggled early in the match and dropped the first set, but rallied back to take the second set, 6-3. In the third is where the match got interesting as the two exchanged games throughout the final set. Late in the contest though, Mendoza was able to finally pull away from Castellano and win the match, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Julian Cash was the next Cowboy to secure his spot in tomorrow's singles quarterfinals as he knocked off Iowa's Josh Silverstein in straight sets.
The match between the two was tight early on as neither player surrendered serve to the other. After Cash held serve to take a 6-5 lead, the Brighton, England native was finally able to capture that elusive break point and lock up the first set. Cash was able to ride that momentum into the second set as he rolled to victory, winning eight of the final nine games in the contest.
Cash, a finalist in the singles main draw a year ago, can match his success at last year's ITA Central Region Championships if he collects two more singles wins on Sunday. The junior was also a finalist in the doubles play with his partner, Arjun Kadhe, at last year's tournament and the two will have a chance to achieve that feat once again after collecting their fourth win of the event on Saturday.
In their match with Drake's Vinny Gillespie and Calum MacGeoch today, neither duo was able to break the other as they found themselves needed a tiebreak to decide a winner. Cash and Kadhe showcased why they were named the nation's doubles tandem once again as they rolled through the tiebreak and secured their spot in tomorrow's semifinals with a 9-8 (4) victory over the Bulldog pair.
Sunday's schedule will consist of both the quarterfinals and semifinals of singles play, the doubles semifinals and the consolation semifinals. Matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m., beginning with the singles quarterfinals and the consolation semifinals. All matches will be contested indoors on Sunday.
