STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team showed why it is one of the nation's best teams as the Cowboys combined to win 15 matches during the second day of play at the ITA Central Region Championships on Friday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
OSU's impressive showing on Friday led the way for six Cowboys to advance to the singles Round of 16 and two doubles duos to move on to the quarterfinals - the most of any school in both singles and doubles. Both of those rounds will be played tomorrow, beginning with the singles Round of 16 at 10 a.m.
OSU got off to a quick start on Friday as seven of the Cowboys competing in singles won their first matches of the day.
Second-seeded Julian Cash, who is currently ranked No. 29 by the ITA, squared off with one of his former Mississippi State teammates - Iowa's Robin Haden - in his opening matchup. The pair's history with one another proved to be the catalyst for a great match as Cash and Haden went back-and-forth throughout. Ultimately though the Cowboy prevailed when he won nine of the last 11 games, including the final five, to seal his spot in the Round of 32.
"It's always tough playing against a former teammate," Cash said. "He's a guy that I'm always cheering for, but today I was trying to beat him. It's just something that happens and you have to do you best to treat them like anyone else. I came out pretty fired up for that match and i felt like I executed well." Cash's teammates were quick to follow suit as Lukas Finzelberg, Jurence Mendoza and Tristan Meraut all won their matches in straight sets. Lucas Gerch brought OSU's win total to five on the day as he too won in dominant fashion, defeating Southern Illinois' Michal Kianicka by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Nathan Roper was the next Cowboy to clinch his spot in the Round of 32 as he notched his second win of the week, defeating Arkansas' Juan Marino in three sets. Arjun Kadhe concluded OSU's hot start to the day as he impressively put away Wilder Pimentel of SIU, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, in his first singles action of the week.
Kadhe was one of the first Cowboys to take the court in the Round of 32 when he faced Minnesota's Felix Corwin. The match marked the second time Kadhe has faced Corwin this season with their previous matchup coming in the doubles consolation semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships.
Kadhe came out on top in that meeting, and the results were much the same on this occasion as the Pune, India native rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win. His win was the first of several for the Cowboys in singles play as five of his teammates also advanced to the Round of 16 on Friday.
Cash was again one of the first OSU competitors to advance to the next round as he rolled in his second match of the day, defeating Minnesota's Marino Alpeza, 6-3, 6-0. Shortly thereafter, Meraut locked up his match as he knocked off Nebraska-Omaha's Razvan Grigorescu, 6-4, 6-3.
Finzelberg was the next to secure his spot in Saturday's draw as he overcame some second-set trouble to top Arkansas' Adam Sanjurjo, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. His German counterpart, Gerch, was also able to knock off a Razorback foe as the Berlin native stormed back to win the match after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Jurence Mendoza brought the Cowboys' Round of 16 tally to six as he bested Minnesota's Justyn Levin, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles play, Cash and Kadhe continued to showcase why they were named the nation's No. 1 doubles team as they cruised into tomorrow's quarterfinal round with an 8-2 victory over Oral Roberts' Barnabas Koncz and Amar Saletovic. The second OSU tandem to advance was the 52nd-ranked pair of Gerch and Mendoza, who knocked off Tulsa's Jacob Hing and Daniel Santos, 8-4.
Gerch, Mendoza and Meraut will play in the first wave of singles tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., while Cash, Finzelberg and Kadhe will take part in the second wave, which won't begin until at least 11 a.m. Doubles play will follow singles action on Saturday.
