Roper Takes Part In Final Day of Pre-Qualifying Action
October 02, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State men's tennis' Nathan Roper competed in his second match of pre-qualifying play at this year's Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Sunday.
After dropping a hard-fought contest to Eastern Washington's Robert Dula yesterday, Roper was matched up with in-state rival Barnabas Koncz of Oral Roberts in the pre-qualifying consolation bracket.
Roper and Koncz went back and forth throughout the first set, but the Cowboy ultimately dropped the hard-fought set. The second set saw similar action to that of the first early on, but Koncz was able find his rhythm and finish off the match in straight sets, defeating Roper, 7-5, 6-2.
For Roper, who is one of three seniors on OSU's roster this year, the loss brings to an end his final trip to the ITA All-American Championships.
The event will continue tomorrow with the first round of qualifying play, where five Cowboys will compete. Lukas Finzelberg, Lucas Gerch, Arjun Kadhe, Jurence Mendoza and Tristan Meraut are the five slated to play in the qualifying rounds, while Julian Cash earned an automatic bid into the main draw based on his coming in at No. 29 in the September 13 edition of the ITA Rankings. In the doubles draw, OSU will field three teams in competition, including the top-seeded and top-ranked tandem of Cash and Kadhe.
Fans can follow all of the qualifying action via live stream while the main draw, which begins on October 6, will be streamed on flotennis.com. For updates on the Cowboys throughout the day, follow @CowboyTennis on Twitter.
