October 15, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
HARLINGEN, Texas – Oklahoma State tennis' Julian Cash and Jurence Mendoza secured spots in the second round of qualifying play at the Harlingen Country Club Men's $25,000 Futures on Saturday.
Both Cash and Mendoza cruised through their matches on day one as they recorded straight-set victories to advance.
Cash was matched up with Cagatay Sami Soke in his first round matchup. The Brighton, England native moved through the match without much resistance as he knocked off Soke, 6-3, 6-4. He will now square off with Aleksandre Bakshi in tomorrow's second round of qualifying.
Mendoza faced a bit of trouble in his first set with Michael Lippens as the two battled back-and-forth tiebreak to determine a winner. The Cowboy ultimately won the tiebreak and then carried the momentum through the second set to win, 7-6 (9), 6-2. Mendoza will now match up with Korey Lovett in Sunday's second round.
Cash and Mendoza will be joined in tomorrow's second round by their teammate Arjun Kadhe, who received a first-round bye in the tournament.
The fourth Cowboy competing this weekend is the youngest member of head coach Jay Udwadia's roster, Mathieu Scaglia.
Scaglia took part in one of the most competitive matches of the day as he and Emmanuel Llamas traded games throughout the contests. Llamas eventually was able to best the young Frenchman in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Tomorrow's schedule at the Harlingen Country Club will consist of the final two rounds of singles qualifying play before the main draw begins on Monday.
