Oklahoma State Snapshot
• For the third straight year, Oklahoma State students stormed the court after the Cowboys took down a ranked Kansas team at Gallagher-Iba Arena. On Tuesday, OSU shot 50.0 from the floor and got another stellar performance from freshman Jawun Evans (22 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists) in an 86-67 drubbing of the No. 3/3 Jayhawks. OSU is now the only team to beat KU in each of the last four seasons. The victory gives head coach Travis Ford 21 wins over AP top 25 opponents, including 11 over the top 10, in his time at OSU.
• The victory over No. 3 Kansas gives the Cowboys a 66.7 all-time win percentage at home against opponents ranked in the Associated Press top three, which is the best in college basketball history according to ESPN. Here's the breakdown.
• Over his last four games, freshman point guard Jawun Evans has averaged 22.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game - all team highs. He earned his second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award on Monday after an epic 42-point scoring performance against Oklahoma and a near triple-double at Texas, and followed that up with a 22-point, eight assist outing against Kansas. Despite being 6-foot, Evans is the Big 12's top freshman in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, assist/turnover ratio, free throw percentage and defensive rebounds.Â
• In Big 12 play, OSU has been a strong second-half team, but was able to put a full 40 minutes together against Kansas. The Cowboys pounced on the Jayhawks with 50.0 percent first-half shooting, including a 53.8 percent clip from 3-point, and went into halftime with a 43-38 lead. In its previous four games, OSU trailed by at least 12 points at the half, but managed to cut those deficits to a single possession in three of the four. In the second half of conference games this year, OSU is shooting 47.1 percent with a +7.2 scoring margin and a +2.7 turnover margin, compared to 41.6 percent shooting, a -7.3 scoring margin and -2.0 turnover margin in the first half.
• The Cowboys field a solid defensive unit that ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring defense at 65.6 points per game. OSU is holding its opponents to 39.3 percent shooting, which ranks second in the league and 31st in the country. The Cowboys defense starts at the rim, where they rank third in the Big 12 and 62nd in the NCAA with 4.7 blocked shots per game. The Cowboys have held their Big 12 opponents to 69.8 points and 40.6 percent shooting - both second in the league.
• Senior Phil Forte injured his elbow in the first half of the win over Towson, which snapped his streak of consecutive games played at 102. The senior hadn't missed a single game in his career up to that point. Forte was a Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honoree, and needs just 55 three-pointers to tie Keiton Page (2008-12) for the school record. At the time, he ranked third in the Big 12 in career scoring and third in the country in career 3-pointers.
• Head coach Travis Ford ranks third in school history in both total wins (153) and win percentage (60.7 percent). Ford ranks behind only Eddie Sutton and Mr. Henry Iba in both categories, and recently picked up his 21st win over a ranked opponent with the victory over No. 3 KU.
Kansas State Snapshot
• Aggressive guard play on both ends of the court have the Wildcats ranked among the Big 12's best in assists and steals. In Big 12 play, K-State ranks second in the conference with 15.2 assists and 7.83 steals per league game. The Wildcats dished out a season-high 23 assists at Baylor on Wednesday night. Justin Edwards leads the way with 3.3 assists per game, which ranks ninth in the Big 12.
• The Wildcats are a formidable bunch inside Bramlage Coliseum, where they own a 9-2 record this year. Only No. 19/17 West Virginia (in double-overtime) and No. 17/18 Iowa State have managed to beat K-State at home this season.
• K-State has managed a diverse offense with five different leading scorers and six players with at least five double-digit scoring games. The Wildcats are 6-2 this season when four or more players register double figures.
• Bruce Weber is a veteran of 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the national title game in 2005, which earned him the national coach of the year award by several publications. He has 386 wins in 18 seasons as a head coach.
Inside the OSU vs Kansas State Series
• The Wildcats lead the overall series with Oklahoma State, 76-51, including a 38-15 edge in Manhattan. K-State holds a slight 7-6 advantage over the Cowboys in the Ford era.
• K-State has won the last four meetings inside Bramlage Coliseum. OSU last won in Manhattan on Jan. 23, 2010, when James Anderson poured in 30 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor and 10-of-11 shooting from the line to lift the Cowboys to a 73-69 upset of the No. 10 Wildcats. That K-State squad would advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.
• The Cowboys overcame a 15-point deficit to beat the Wildcats, 75-69, in overtime on Jan. 2, 1999. The victory is the third biggest comeback by an OSU team in a Big 12 game. Adrian Peterson led the Cowboys that day with 24 points and nine boards.
An Oklahoma State Win Would ...
• Give the Cowboys their first true road win of the season. OSU is 0-3 in true road games at No. 13 Baylor, No. 6 West Virginia and Texas, who have combined for a 29-1 record at home this year.
• Snap OSU's four-game losing streak at Bramlage Coliseum, and improve the Cowboys to 7-7 against K-State in the Travis Ford era.
• Give the Cowboys back-to-back wins over RPI top 75 teams for the first time this year. OSU downed current RPI No. 5 Kansas on Tuesday, and K-State checks in at No. 58.
• Improve the Cowboys to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in Big 12 play.
