Cowgirls Win Season Opener Over SMU

STILLWATER – No. 6 Oklahoma State opened up the 2015-16 season with a 13-6 win against SMU on Saturday.
"We had a really good start to the season," Cowgirl Head Coach Larry Sanchez said.
The meet started with Equitation over Fences. Sophomore Carly Barrick, who earned Most Outstanding Player honors in Equitation on the Flat, defeated SMU's Sylvia de Toledo 80-79 and Junior Jorden Davis defeated SMU's Nora Gray.
The Mustangs' Julia Fowler defeated OSU's Amy White 81-75 and Schaefer Raposa defeated Oklahoma State's Maggie Drysch 83-76.
Katie Jones and Alex Butterworth tied 77-77 to create a 2-2 tie in the event.
The next event was Horsemanship. Oklahoma State breezed through the event, winning 4-1.
The victorious Cowgirls were Libby Collins, who defeated Ashley Mauney 70.5-67.5, Miranda Reed, who defeated Michaela Dinger 74-71.5, Ty Paris, who topped Jaclyn White 73-72, and Paris Nottingham, who won 75-73 over Hannah McCain of SMU.
Equitation on the Flat was a tight contest throughout.
Drysch and Kendall Pedigo each won their head-to-head matches for the Cowgirls. Raposa and Gray were victorious for the Mustangs.
With the score tied 2-2 and de Toledo scoring 79 for SMU, Barrick posted an 82, which was the highest score of the day, to give the Cowgirls a 3-2 victory in the category.
The final event of the day was Reining, which the Cowgirls won 4-1.
Brenna Brawner, Justine Peters, Erin Willoughby and Ebba Lange all recorded victories for the Cowgirls.
Brawner was the MOP in Reining.
"We have a lot of talent on this team and need to continue to work hard each week," Sanchez said.
Oklahoma State returns to action on October 9 in Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State.
