STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team tacked on another victory to its fall exhibition schedule Wednesday night, defeating NOC-Enid, 19-1, at Cowgirl Stadium.
Box Score
After allowing only two hits to Cowley College on Friday, OSU commandeered another effective outing in the circle. Kacy Freeze, Brandi Needham and Peyton Walker combined to allow only one earned run throughout the scrimmage and strike out seven NOC-Enid hitters. The Cowgirls (2-0) were a force on offense, pounding out 21 hits and a pair of home runs in the nine-inning contest.
The bats were hot from the start, as Oklahoma State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to senior Tiffany Mikkelson's first home run of the fall. The Cowgirls then added runs in fourth and fifth before scoring four in the sixth. Mikkelson lined an RBI single through the left side, and Darcy Taylor hit a moonshot over the wall in the left for her first hit of the season.
With a 9-1 lead heading into the eighth, the Cowgirls continued to produce against the NOC-Enid pitching arsenal. After back-to-back RBI singles from Danielle Riddle and Randee O'Donnell in a four-run bottom of the eighth, Oklahoma State constructed six runs in the ninth, marking their highest single-inning total of the fall.
Out of the 15 Cowgirls sent to the plate, 12 recorded base-hits and seven registered multi-hit efforts. Oklahoma State's 19-run effort was highlighted by solid performances from Mikkelson (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBIs), Riddle (1-for-4, 2 RBIs), Asea Webber (2-for-2, 2 RBIs, 2B) and Darcy Taylor (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBIs). Michaela Patton (3-for-3, RBI, 2 R) and O'Donnell (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI) also chipped in with three-hit efforts.
Making her first start of the fall, Freeze was dominant through four innings of work. After allowing a single to lead off the first, Freeze retired nine-straight batters to keep the Jets scoreless through three frames. NOC-Enid mustered a run in the fourth, but Freeze finished three strikeouts and earned her first victory with the Cowgirls.
Needham came on in relief in the fifth and providing an effective outing of her own, tossing four innings of shutout ball. After a scoreless four-inning effort in the season-opener, Needham kept her perfect ERA intact, chipping in three strikeouts in the process. Walker also recorded a perfect outing, shutting out the Jets over the final frame.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a 5 p.m. matchup with Barton CC in Stillwater. For more information and updates, follow @CowgirlSB on Twitter.
