Cowgirls Knock Off No. 18 Arizona State
September 18, 2015 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State used a pair of second-half goals Friday night to earn a 3-2 win over 18th-ranked Arizona State in come-from-behind fashion at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
Â
Delaney Kiely, Laurene Tresfield and Anna Beffer each found the back of the net for the first time this season, with Beffer's score in the 69th minute proving to be the game winner, as the Cowgirls improved to 4-4-0 on the season.
Â
The win also marked a milestone for OSU head coach Colin Carmichael, who notched his 150th career victory in his 11th season leading the Cowgirls.
Â
"It was a really important win against a very good team," Carmichael said. "In the first half, they caused us a ton of trouble; our shape wasn't great and that's on us as coaches. We put our team out in a shape we thought would work, and it didn't so we made a little adjustment at halftime. But more important than that, our kids played really hard in the second half and worked really hard to close them down and scored a couple of goals.
Â
"The first half, we were disappointed in how we played; the second half we were great."
Â
OSU needed just 81 seconds to get on the scoreboard. Off a corner kick by Christina Jean-Charles, Tresfield sent a header into the box that Courtney Dike delivered to a waiting Delaney Kiely, and Kiely blasted a shot from eight-yards out that deflected off the crossbar and over the line to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Sun Devils (4-2-0) would get the equalizer in the 21st minute when leading scorer Cali Farquharson collected a pass from Larisa Staub and sent a low shot to the near post to make it 1-1. The goal was Farquharson's fifth of the season.
Â
Following a 40-minute lightning delay with 10:27 left in the first half, ASU quickly took the lead when the game resumed as Lucy Lara blasted a free kick to the top shelf near post from 22-yards out to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Â
ASU maintained that advantage until the 57:32 mark when Tresfield went up in traffic in the box and headed the ball past goalie Chandler Morris to tie the score at 2-2.
Â
Just over 10 minutes later, it was Beffer on the receiving end of another cross from Dike, who went endline and sent a ball through the box that Beffer tapped in for the go-ahead score.
Â
OSU's 3-2 triumph was its first win over a nationally ranked team this season, and the Cowgirls' three goals came against an ASU squad that had allowed only one goal in its first five games of 2015.
Â
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday when they go back on the road to face UMKC in Kansas City at 1 p.m.
