Cowgirls Fall At Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Oklahoma State gave up a goal with just over two minutes remaining in regulation Friday night and suffered a 2-1 loss to Washington State at Lower Soccer Field.
The Cowgirls' third-straight loss dropped OSU to 2-4-0 on the season, while WSU remained perfect at 5-0-0.
Washington State got the late game winner when Cara Wegner rebounded a shot by Kourtney Guetlein and sent it in from five-yards out with just 2:06 left on the clock.
"Again, we played reasonably well on the road in a tough place but came up short," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "It's frustrating from our standpoint. We talk about wanting to win those tight games and needing to find a way to get it done, and right now we're coming up short."
WSU needed just 87 seconds to take the game's initial lead when Guetlein got behind the Cowgirls' defense and delivered a shot from the top of the box to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
The Cowgirls trailed for much of the opening half but would net the equalizer in the 37th minute.
Following a scramble in the box off a corner kick, Courtney Dike gained possession and sent a low shot to the near post past WSU keeper Ella Dederick, tying the score at 1-1. The goal was the third of the season for Dike.
The game remained deadlocked for most of the second half, in part due to several outstanding saves by OSU goalie Michela Ongaro. The Cowgirls' sophomore keeper finished with five saves in the match, including a pair down the stretch when she saved a shot by Wegner in the 78th minute before diving and knocking away a Wegner header in the 85th minute.
OSU returns to action Sunday at Gonzaga with a match scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
