From The Perimeter To The Paint; Hammonds Expanding His Arsenal
August 27, 2015 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – Through two seasons at Oklahoma State, Leyton Hammonds took 41 career shots and nearly 60 percent of those came from beyond the 3-point arc. He shot a respectable 28.9 percent from deep, but his 6-foot 8-inch frame and deceptive speed begged for a role bigger than a spot shooter.
Head coach Travis Ford and Hammonds spent the summer concocting that new role, which has the junior morphing into a stretch forward. Some days Hammonds can be found working on his ball handling with the guards, and others he's pounding the paint with the posts.
"I'm a pretty long and versatile player, so I can post up smaller guards but I'm faster than most of the big guys," Hammonds said. "I love this new position, and I really think it's a natural transition for me. Hopefully I can help the team more this season."
The above video follows Hammonds through a typical practice with the Cowboy power forwards and centers. In his new position, Hammonds must learn to throw his weight around on the low block, while still being able to step out and knock down a 12-foot jumper.
