GREECE – Jawun Evans will get his shot at gold. The future Oklahoma State point guard and his USA Basketball teammates overcame a strong Greek side, 82-76, and will play for the FIBA World Championship on Sunday against Croatia.
For a second straight game Evans played turnover-free ball. The Dallas native tallied two assists and a steal in just under eight minutes of action.
Evans ranks second on the USA squad with 3.2 assists per game, and is also tallying 2.0 points and 1.2 steals per game. For the tournament, the Americans are +71 points with Evans on the floor.
A victory in Sunday's title game would give the Americans back-to-back FIBA World Championships, and would make Evans the thid OSU Cowboy to win a FIBA U19 gold. Former OSU All-American Marcus Smart led the 2013 squad to a title in Prague, Czech Republic, while Matt Clark helped the USA win the first FIBA games in 1979.
Croatia's only loss in the tournament came at the hands of the Americans, 103-81, back on June 28. Croatia is the 12th ranked team in the world, and downed Turkey, 91-56, for a spot in the finals.
