Evans, USA Basketball Overcome Italy To Move Into FIBA Semis

GREECE – The U19 USA Basketball squad faced its toughest test yet, but was able to use a second-quarter burst to power past Italy, 86-65, to advance to the semifinals of the FIBA World Championships.
Future OSU point guard Jawun Evans was efficient as usual with three assists and zero turnovers, and the USA was +10 points with him on the floor. Evans added two points on the day, and now owns a plus/minus of +78 for the tournament.
Italy led the USA by seven in the opening frame, but the USA out-scored the Italians 26-15 in the second quarter to head into the half-time break with an 18-point lead. The USA shot 54 Â percent on the day, and would lead by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.
The Americans continue their drive for back-to-back championships on Saturday against the winner of Spain and Greece. Tipoff time has yet to be released.
Led by former OSU All-American Marcus Smart, the USA won a championship in 2013. The last back-to-back championships for the USA came in 1979 and 1983.
