Sude Earns Singles All-America Honors, Cowboy Duo Advances in Doubles
May 21, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
WACO, Texas -- Oklahoma State senior Jakob Sude cruised his way to All-American status, defeating TCU freshman Guillermo Nunez, 6-0, 6-3, in the NCAA Men's Singles Championship round of 32 on Thursday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
Sude becomes the first singles All-American for the Cowboy Tennis program since 2010. He also earned doubles All-America honors in 2014.
Sude is now 14-10 on the year after his straight-set triumph over the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
"Everyone can play in this tournament. It's a tough field" Sude said. "To come in a win two matches in a row is a big deal. I'm honored to be an All-American."
The Cowboy showed superiority in the first set, shutting out No. 59 Nunez quickly, 6-0. In the second set, Sude continued his dominance, leading the Horned Frog 5-2. Nunez won a game to cut Sude's lead to 5-3, but it was not enough as the Cowboy served for the win and came out victorious.
He will face ninth-ranked Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame in the round of 16 on Friday. The time is to be determined.
Sude also competed in the doubles tournament, where he and teammate Arjun Kadhe opened with a win over Florida State's Lock/Nunez pair, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In the first, Cowboy duo pulled ahead quickly, at one point holding a 4-1 lead. The Pokes continued to control the set and went on to win it 6-3.
The Seminole tandem responded in the second set with a crucial break that eventually gave it a 5-3 lead over Sude and Kadhe. The Cowboys were not able to hold off the Seminoles and fell in the second set, 6-3.
The Cowboys powered through in the third set, taking out FSU's 16th-ranked team with a 6-3 third set win to secure their spot in the round of 16.
"We played solid in the first set and started well in the second," Kadhe said. "We played a loose game at 3-3 in the second, but we were in control of the match at all times as we were serving big. Getting the win feels good and we are ready for tomorrow."
The Pokes will take on Marko Krickovic and Lukas Oilert of Auburn tomorrow in hopes of earning their second-straight doubles All-America honors.
