NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 29 Oklahoma State's men's tennis team fell in its final regular season match to top-ranked Oklahoma, 4-1, on Sunday
afternoon in Norman.
"It was a hard-fought match," coach Jay Udwadia said. "Matches against an in-state rival are always going to be intense. It felt like our doubles
was really clicking. We finally got over the hump. In singles, we had some tight first sets. You have to give them credit for hanging on. We know
that we can play at a very high level, and we look forward to playing at that level next week at the Big 12 tournament and focus on our first-round
match on Friday."
The Cowboys (17-8; 0-5 Big 12) earned a 1-0 lead, taking the doubles point with wins on courts three and one, respectively. It marked the 12th
doubles point the Cowboys have won this season and their first against a conference opponent.
Lukas Finzelberg and Jurence Mendoza were the first to finish their match, defeating the Salazar/Papac team, 6-3, on court three.
The Pokes dropped the match on court two as Nicolai Ferrigno and Lucas Gerch fell to No. 70 Ghilea and Harris, 6-3.
Clinching the doubles point was the No. 33 tandem of Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe, who knocked off eighth-ranked Dane Webb and Axel Alvarez
in nine games, 6-3.
After a rain delay, OU responded in singles, picking up wins on courts two, three, four and five, respectively.
No. 114 Gerch fell to sixth-ranked Andrew Harris on court two in two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Shortly after, play was concluded on court three as Sooner
and 34th-ranked Dane Webb defeated Arjun Kadhe, 6-4, 6-3.
OU extended its lead to 3-1 when Cowboy Tristan Meraut lost a tough 6-3, 6-4 match to No. 78 Alex Ghilea in his first match back in the lineup for
the Pokes after sustaining an injury in late-March.
The Sooners sealed the win with a victory on court five as Lukas Finzelberg suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Spencer Papa in a battle on court five.
Play on courts one and six was unfinished.
On court one, No. 40 Sude took the first set over the nation's No. 1 player Axel Alvarez, 6-2. The match was forced to a third set as Alvarez won
