Senior Night
Oklahoma State will honor its senior class prior to Saturday's game. The group includes three starters - Le'Bryan Nash, Michael Cobbins and Anthony Hickey - plus Christien Sager, Marek Souček and Alex Budke. Members of the group have been part of 77 wins, two trips to the NCAA Tournament and have combined to score 3,629 points during their career.
Oklahoma State From a Distance
Oklahoma State has faced opponents ranked in the Associated Press top 25 in seven of its last nine games. Using this week's RPI rankings according to the NCAA, OSU has three wins over teams with an RPI in the top 10, six wins over teams with an RPI in the top 50 and nine wins over teams with an RPI in the top 100.
The Cowboys are led by senior forward Le'Bryan Nash, who ranks second in the Big 12 with 16.9 points per game. Nash has scored in double figures every game this season and is the Big 12's active leader with 1,764 career points. Looking to get uncorked after uncharacteristic performances the last four games, junior guard Phil Forte is a key component in the Oklahoma State attack. In OSU's 17 wins, Forte averages 17.8 points on .484 pct. shooting from the field. In the Cowboys' 11 losses, Forte averages 12.3 points on .346 pct. shooting from the field.
Other key contributors include senior guard Anthony Hickey (9.4 points on .458 pct. shooting from three-point range the last five games), junior guard Jeff Newberry, who has emerged as a solid defensive player as the season has progressed and who averages 9.2 points per game in his last five outings, and Michael Cobbins, who, fresh off a double-double last game at Texas Tech (10 points, 11 rebounds), has turned in his three best scoring outputs against Big 12 opponents in his last three games.
Oklahoma State is a formidable defensive team. The Cowboys rank in the top 50 nationally in many of the prominent defensive statistical categories and are a top-30 team nationally in steals and blocked shots.
TCU From a Distance
When TCU (then-owner of a 1-10 record in Big 12 play) beat Oklahoma State in Fort Worth on Feb. 14, some were quick to throw blame at OSU, but the reality is that TCU's roster features good size and the Horned Frogs can play. Evidence to back that up is that TCU owns an RPI in the top 50 nationally, according to both Jeff Sagarin and Ken Pomeroy and the Horned Frogs used that win over the Cowboys as a springboard to win three of their last five against Big 12 opposition. The two losses during that span were single-digit defeats at Kansas and at Oklahoma.
Guard Kyan Anderson (13.4 points and 4.3 assists per game) is a dynamic player who can beat you with the two (36 percent of his points come from two-pointers), the three (38 percent of his points come from made three-pointers) or by getting to the free throw line (27 percent of his points come from the charity stripe). In the last five games, guard Trey Ziegler is averaging 13.4 points on .581 pct. shooting from the field. The frontcourt foursome of forwards Amric Fields, Chris Washburn and Kenrich Williams plus center Karviar Shepherd has combined to average 33.7 points and 21.2 rebounds per game in the last five games.
An Oklahoma State Win Would...
► Give the Cowboys their 11th win in the last 12 meetings with TCU and their sixth straight win over the Horned Frogs in games played in Stillwater.
► Improve the Cowboys to 81-4 against unranked opponents in Gallagher-Iba Arena since Travis Ford took over as head coach in 2008-09 (.953 pct.) OSU has won 10 straight home games over unranked opponents, dating back to a 77-74 loss to Oklahoma last season.
► Improve the Cowboys to 12-4 overall and 6-3 against Big 12 opponents in Gallagher-Iba Arena this season.
► Improve OSU to 94-18 in Gallagher-Iba Arena under Travis Ford (.839 pct.)
► Improve the Cowboys to 13-3 against unranked opponents this season.
► Improve the Cowboys to 8-2 against teams from the state of Texas this season.
► Improve the Cowboys to 22-3 all-time against TCU.
