Cowgirl Tennis Falls to No. 3 North Carolina

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 16th-ranked Cowgirl tennis squad was bested by No. 3 North Carolina, 5-1, Friday in the first round of the ITA Team Indoor Nationals, hosted by the University of Virginia.
“We got off to a bad start in doubles,” coach Chris Young said. “North Carolina brought a lot of energy and executed well. Many of the doubles games went to deuce and UNC just won the bigger points. We knew coming in that North Carolina was a tough opponent, and today, we saw what we need to work on. It's important now that we regroup and get ready for our next match tomorrow.”
The Cowgirls dropped the doubles point on courts two and three. On court one, the No. 5-ranked duo of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente was tied, 3-3, with No. 13-ranked Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle when doubles play ended.
In singles competition, UNC earned a quick 2-0 lead with a win on court one, but OSU freshman Vladica Babic put the first point on the board for the Cowgirls with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court four over Whitney Kay, cutting the Tar Heel lead to 2-1.
Although matches were competitive on the remaining four courts, the Cowgirls were not able to hold off the Tar Heels, losing bouts on courts three, five and six.
The match was clinched on court three, where No. 53 Katarina Adamovic battled against 22nd-ranked Caroline Price.
Although play was not finished on court two, Cowgirl Kelsey Laurente led the match against No. 31 Hayley Carter with a 6-4, 4-2 advantage.
The Cowgirls continue play at the event tomorrow as they face sixth-seeded Alabama at 9 a.m.
