OSU vs. West Virginia Postgame Quotes
February 19, 2015 | Cowgirl Basketball
Oklahoma State Coach Jim Littell
Opening Statement
"We're elated to come in here and escape with a win. This is a team who has played pretty well at home and they're a team who was 4-2 here in conference play. We came in here a year ago and got blown out so we are very excited to win this game. The first half, both teams may have set basketball back 50 years. It was some ugly basketball for both teams. I'm proud of our group for continuing to defend. We did a lot better job on the boards. When we lost at Stillwater we gave up 19 offensive rebounds and we only gave up six tonight. The turnovers kind of negated each other. Roddricka Patton almost had a double-double with assists and turnovers, but I thought she made some really good plays at the end of the game to split the press. Brittney Martin put the ball on the floor and made shots every time something broke down. 24 and nine is a huge night in here."
On answering WVU runs
"I think there are some players who stepped up and made key plays. LaShawn Jones was able to create some lob situations. We were able to get the ball to Brittney (Martin) when the shot clock was winding down and she was very creative with the ball in her hands. Roddricka Patton is really fast and she made a lot of plays at the end of the game. I thought that every time they made a run, we answered with a key basket or a key pass."
On defending Bria Holmes
"We talked to our players about stepping up and taking charges and how that can change the dynamic of the game. We took two charges on her early and even in the beginning of the second half I thought she didn't drive as much because we had taken those charges. She has a WNBA body and she is so fast in transition. She played really well and got them back into the game in the last few minutes, but I thought the deciding factor in the game was taking those two charges against her in the first half."
West Virginia Coach Mike Carey
On the game
"The last time Bria Holmes picked up two quick fouls, the rest of them picked it up and played well. This time she picked up two quick fouls and we didn't. It's amazing to me that we don't get offensive rebounds and then we don't get back on defense. That tells me it is going to be a whole new team next year. Some of these players don't deserve to wear West Virginia on their jerseys, and starting tomorrow we're not going to wear West Virginia in practice. We didn't get offensive boards. We didn't sprint back on defense and we took bad shots. We had four assists and 19 turnovers; that says it all right there. I'm not taking anything away from Oklahoma State, they won."
On Bria Holmes' foul trouble
"We run a lot of stuff through her. The last time that happened we had girls step up and score and play defense, this time no one did it."
On the lack of ball movement
"Some of the problem is that we still have girls on our team who don't know the plays. Our offense is limited because we have people coming in who don't know the plays. We work on this stuff every day and then we stand and hold the ball and don't pass it. We just kept holding the ball. I take the blame for everything."
On the effort tonight
"I was very surprised. It wasn't everyone, we had some girls trying to guard two or three people one time. It's the minority that is playing hard, the majority is just standing around."
